Although the proposed women’s quota has broad political support, the delimitation exercise has become the central point of contention. Sonia Gandhi has warned that the redrawing of constituencies based on outdated census data could have far-reaching consequences.
She stressed that historically, delimitation has always followed a fresh census to ensure accurate population representation. Deviating from this norm, she argued, could disadvantage states that have successfully controlled population growth.
The government, however, maintains that using the 2011 Census data is necessary to meet the 2029 implementation timeline, setting the stage for a major political standoff.
